Air entrainment and granular bubbles produced by an impinging jet of grains into water
A jet of water entering into a pool of the same liquid can generate air
entrainment and form bubbles that rapidly raise to the surface and
disintegrate. Here we report the equivalent phenomenon produced by a plunging
dry granular jet, so far unexplored. For grains smaller than a critical size,
the granular jet entering into the pool produces air entrainment that leads to
bubbles formation. The bubbles formed are covered by a shell of grains attached
to the bubble air-water interface due to capillary-induced cohesion. In
contrast to classical air bubbles, these "granular bubbles" are stable over
time because the granular shell prevents coalescence and keeps the air
encapsulated either if the bubbles rise to the surface or sink to the bottom of
the pool, which is determined by the competition of the buoyant force and the
weight of the assembly. Experimentally, we show how the bubble size and volume
of entrained air depend on the grain size, liquid properties and jet impact

Battery energy management strategies for UK firm frequency response services and energy arbitrage
Due to the increasing renewable penetration, there is potential for larger and faster grid frequency fluctuations increasing the risk of system instability. The National Grid Electricity Transmission, primary electricity transmission network operator in the UK, has introduced various frequency response services that are developed to provide a real-time response to deviations in the grid frequency. A battery energy storage system is a suitable choice for delivering such services. Here, a control algorithm is presented which generates a charge/discharge power output with respect to deviations in the grid frequency and the required specifications. Using the real UK electricity prices, an arbitrage control algorithm has been also developed to deliver different types of grid balancing services, while scheduling throughout the day for energy arbitrage. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm delivers both dynamic and non-dynamic firm frequency response and also enhanced frequency response to specifications, while generating arbitrage revenue in the balancing market. Simulation results on a 1âMW/1âMWh lithium-titanate BESS are provided to verify the proposed algorithm based on the control of an experimentally validated battery model
Attitudes of Germans towards distributive issues in the German health system
Social health care systems are inevitably confronted with the scarcity of resources and the resulting distributional challenges. Since prioritization implies distributional effects, decisions on respective rules should take citizensâ preferences into account. Thus, knowledge about citizensâ attitudes and preferences regarding different distributional issues implied by the type of financing health care is necessary to judge the public acceptance of a health system. In this study we concentrate on two distributive issues in the German health system: First, we analyse the acceptance of prioritizing decisions concerning the treatment of certain patient groups, in this case patients who all need a heart operation. Here we focus on the fact that a patient is strong smoker or a non-smoker, the criteria of age or the fact that a patient has or does not have young children. Second, we investigate Germansâ opinions towards income dependent health services. The results reveal strong effects of individualsâ attitudes regarding general aspects of the health system on priorities, e.g. that individuals behaving health demanding should not be preferred. In addition, experiences of limited access to health services are found to have a strong influence on citizensâ attitudes, too. Finally, decisions about different prioritization criteria are found to be not independent.
FXYD5/Dysadherin, a Biomarker of Endometrial Cancer Myometrial Invasion and Aggressiveness : Its Relationship With TGF-ÎČ1 and NF-ÎșB Pathways
Objective: Endometrial cancer (EC) is the second most common gynecological cancer worldwide. Myometrial invasion (MI) is a key event in EC dissemination. This study aimed to evaluate FXYD5/dysadherin (FXYD5/Dys) expression in EC tissue and uterine aspirate (UA) biopsies and to assess molecular/functional changes associated with its expression in cellular models. Methods: FXYD5/Dys messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were determined in EC tissue and UA biopsies. FXYD5/Dys expression was evaluated in EC RNAseq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and GENEVESTIGATOR tools. FXYD5/Dys impact on E-cadherin expression and cell behavior was assessed in EC Hec1a cells treated with transforming growth factor (TGF)-ÎČ1, stably transfected with ETV5, and transiently transfected with FXYD5/Dys small interfering RNA (siRNA) or pcDNA3-FXYD5/Dys plasmid. Results: FXYD5/Dys was associated with EC aggressiveness, finding high mRNA levels in tumors depicting MI > 50%, Grade 3, and intermediate/high risk of recurrence. FXYD5/Dys was highly expressed at the tumor invasive front compared to the superficial area. Most results were recapitulated in UA biopsies. FXYD5/Dys modulation in Hec1a cells altered cell migration/adhesion and E-cadherin expression. TGF-ÎČ1 treatment of Hec1a cells induced FXYD5/Dys expression. TCGA-UCEC RNAseq analysis revealed a positive correlation between FXYD5/Dys, TGF-ÎČ1, and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 mRNA levels. FXYD5/Dys induced nuclear factor (NF)-ÎșB pathway activation in Hec1a cells. FXYD5/Dys mRNA levels positively correlated with transcriptional activation of NF-ÎșB p65-regulated genes. Survival analysis revealed patient segregation into low- and high-risk groups, the latter depicting the highest FXYD5/Dys, PAI-1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and TGF-ÎČ1 mRNA levels and shorter survival rates. Conclusion: FXYD5/Dys is a novel biomarker of EC progression related to TGF-ÎČ1 and NF-ÎșB pathways that collectively promote tumor dissemination and result in poor patient prognosis

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons in Events with Multiple Bottom Quarks at the Tevatron
The combination of searches performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association
with b quarks is reported. The data, corresponding to 2.6 fb-1 of integrated
luminosity at CDF and 5.2 fb-1 at D0, have been collected in final states
containing three or more b jets. Upper limits are set on the cross section
multiplied by the branching ratio varying between 44 pb and 0.7 pb in the Higgs
boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, assuming production of a narrow scalar boson.
Significant enhancements to the production of Higgs bosons can be found in
theories beyond the standard model, for example in supersymmetry. The results
are interpreted as upper limits in the parameter space of the minimal
supersymmetric standard model in a benchmark scenario favoring this decay mode.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a
Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are
sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield
collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets.
The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing
suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a
data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits
in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and
branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for
a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any
enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for
t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version
